Short answer: There is no single month we can substantiate as the cheapest for every Colorado destination. Shoulder-season dates can offer better lodging value, but the result depends on the town, your activities, holidays, events, and the actual travel quotes available when you book.

Are April and October cheaper?
They can be worth checking, but neither is a guaranteed bargain. April may fall between some destinations' busy seasons while skiing and spring breaks keep others active. October can bring quieter dates, but fall-color travel, events, and weather-dependent access change the picture. The same calendar month can be a good value in one town and expensive in another.
An earlier version of this article described April or October as definitively cheapest and quoted accommodation discounts of 20%–50%. We did not have a supporting price comparison for those figures. Those claims have been removed.
Compare value for the trip you actually want
- A ski trip: Compare lodging, lift access, equipment, transport, and the resort's operating calendar. Lower accommodation prices are not useful if your intended ski area is closed.
- A Rocky Mountain National Park trip: Decide whether crossing Trail Ridge Road or reaching higher-elevation trails is essential. Lower-priced dates do not guarantee those activities are available.
- A family gathering in Grand Lake: Compare several midweek and weekend date options with the same guest count. Consider bedrooms, shared spaces, cooking facilities, and the activities your group can realistically enjoy.
A repeatable way to find your lower-cost dates
- Choose the destination and must-do activities first. List what must be open and what you can skip.
- Quote several comparable stays. Use the same number of nights, guests, and room requirements. Check weekday and weekend options rather than assuming either will always be cheaper.
- Compare the final payable total. Include taxes, cleaning or service fees, parking, baggage, rental-car costs, and any required tickets. An advertised nightly price or airfare is not the whole trip cost.
- Read the terms. Cancellation policies, minimum stays, and weather flexibility can be more valuable than a small headline discount.
- Record when you checked. Prices and availability change; a quote is evidence for that specific itinerary and time, not a statewide annual rule.
What to check before booking shoulder-season travel
Consult the National Park Service's Rocky Mountain National Park seasons and operating information and road-status page. Snow, temporary closures, and seasonal facilities can affect plans even when a town's shops and lodging remain open. Check COTrip for your driving route.
